Alicia discovers Nash’s hidden “top-secret office” filled with chaotic newspaper clippings. When she confronts him, Nash insists he is on a secret mission for Parcher. Parcher, however, is a hallucination. So is Nash’s roommate from Princeton (Charles) and Charles’s young niece, Marcee — none of them ever existed.

Psychiatrist Dr. Rosen diagnoses Nash with paranoid schizophrenia. Nash undergoes painful insulin shock therapy and later takes antipsychotic medication, but the side effects (emotional numbness, erectile dysfunction) and the allure of his hallucinations drive him to stop treatment.
