Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach (2021), developed by Steel Wool Studios and published by Scott Cawthon, marks a radical departure from the franchise’s traditional point-and-click survival formula. As the ninth core entry, it introduces a semi-open world, free-roam stealth gameplay, and a stronger narrative focus on a child protagonist, Gregory.
FNaF 9: Security Breach is a bold evolution for the series, trading claustrophobic offices for a sprawling, neon-lit labyrinth. While its execution was imperfect, it expanded the lore significantly and proved that FNaF could thrive in new genres, appealing to both longtime fans and a younger generation of horror gamers.
FNaF 9: Security Breach – A Shift into Open-World Horror
Set in the massive, 1980s-themed “Mega Pizzaplex,” the game follows a young boy named Gregory, who becomes trapped overnight after hours. He is hunted by the glam rock animatronics—Glamrock Freddy, Chica, Roxanne Wolf, and Montgomery Gator—who have been corrupted by the rogue AI, Vanny (a reluctant follower of the series’ recurring villain, William Afton, now manifesting as “Glitchtrap”). With the help of a sympathetic, partially malfunctioning Glamrock Freddy, Gregory must survive until 6 AM, uncover hidden secrets, and escape.
