Indonesian entertainment has transitioned from a top-down, televised narrative to a bottom-up, algorithmic bazaar of short videos. While sinetron taught audiences to desire middle-class stability and divine retribution, YouTube and TikTok encourage real-time identity play, micro-celebrity, and communal memeing. The persistence of religious morality and social satire, however, shows that Indonesian culture is not passively Westernized. Instead, popular videos become a site where gotong royong (mutual cooperation) meets the algorithm.
